"Friends of Carlotta" is a album of outstanding music that was originally published in 1999 as a limited edition of only 2000 units. This album was used at many High End/High Fidelity shows as a demonstration of exceptionally high quality sound reproduction and of brilliant artistic interpretation of music. It is because of the extensive experience of Gutner Pauler that this high standard of recording was achieved, and to make it possible for discerning listeners to hear such quality, this new 180 gram LP album was prduced jointly between Clearaudio and pauler Acoustics as a "direct to disc from amster tape" production.

One chooses a handful of outstanding musicians, capable of 20 minutes (per vinyl-side) of technical and artistic perfetion. Sounds easy, but it's not - the craft of making music "by hand" has, in modern Pop-music, largely been replaced by the computer. The fact that there was only one mistake-induced break in the recording (in the 1st half) speaks volumes for the quality of musicianship that was at work here. The cecond take was perfect. The recipe for a successful Direct-to-Disc experiment demands a studio equipped with not only tradional and hyper-modern audio-recording technology, but also a Disc-Cutting-Lathe. The machine used in this case was a VMS-82 DMM Lathe (Direct Metal Mastering). This unit was introduced by NEUMANN, Berlin in 1982 and was simultaneously the crowning gloy and the conclusion of more than a decade of research and development.
